Protection request for File:Brown rat distribution.png

Hello, Yann.

Can you temporarily protect File:Brown rat distribution.png (which you did back in January, for a duration of two months)? I reverted the map (which is used by numerous articles across Wikipedia) to its original upload version. Other users put the man-made boundaries of Alberta to the map, depicting the whole province as devoid of the species brown rat (rattus norvegicus), which is false and baseless. This large province has a population of brown rats, and they do not stop at its invisible border. Brown rats are detected in the province and are often reported in the news.

Yes, you reverted a map that neutrally says that it is disputed that brown rats are in Alberta and you did not explain the revert there. English Wikipedia has text that there are no brown rats in Alberta. I'm skeptical of the claim, but can we keep the version that says it's disputed? Abzeronow (talk) 21:33, 17 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The SVG version shows the unfounded claim of Alberta being "rat free". The PNG map (which numerous Wikipedia articles already use) should remain the original way it was uploaded, without the man-made borders of Alberta. The later dubious addition of Alberta in the map, was the reason why the PNG map was removed in the English Wikipedia article en:brown rat. Oirattas (talk) 01:59, 20 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Image Under Deletion Request Appeal

You deleted File:TEXRail Map.jpg which was initially tagged for speedy deletion by a user, but they incorrectly attributed the source of the image which they claimed was where the copyright violation was from. This was incorrect and I filed an appeal here per the instructions on the speedy deletion template.

I can be corrected, but an image shouldn't be deleted while it's in the hands of the community so to speak, where they're input is being asked for, especially since the logic of the user that initially reported the image for speedy deletion was offbase.

Hello, thanks for handling the ones I tagged from this user that were violations. I stopped tagging because as I was going through their contributions it seems like all of their image uploads are taken from the website of icheck. But their username suggests that they may be affiliated with icheck, and as such perhaps they do have the ability to release them into the public domain/under a compatible license. I didn't want to keep tagging as copyright violations, but at the same time I'm not sure if tagging as permission required for delayed deletion would be appropriate either. Another factor that led me to stop tagging is my likely inability to communicate with the user if they truly are a representative of the company - the company is Vietnamese and it's likely they only speak that language. I know there's a lot of templates that could be used to give them information about how to submit proof they are legally allowed to release the images to Commons.. but I'm not sure what the best way forward would've been to both flag the issue with the others and give the user the information to correct it if they do have that permission - to tag for speedy as copyvio, to tag for delayed as permission required, or to leave the user some template note (and if so which one) regarding the issue?
